The stories that seem to fill every crack of this city: WWII and the cold war that followed it. This photo is full of the cold war but those round white lamps that divide the photo are to show where the front line of that war was. The key word in that sentence is was. The Berlin Wall was right there and the East German checkpoint with a guard tower and barriers and guards with guns was right there too. The name of the western checkpoint is famous, it's Checkpoint Charlie, the eastern one is not so, it's Border Crossing Point Friedrichstraße/Zimmerstraße. The west always did have better branding. It was near here in 1961 that those guards with guns shot eighteen year old Peter Fechter as he tried to escape. He bled to death over the next hour, calling for someone to save him. No one did. Western soldiers couldn't save him because he fell on the east side, eastern soldiers couldn't save him because he was too close to the west side. So it goes. A few months later in 1961 there were tanks on both sides pointing at each other here. Everybody eventually calmed down and nothing bad happened. About this standoff and resolution, Kennedy famously said, 'a wall is a hell of a lot better than a war'. People called him weak for that statement but, he was right.
